Conservation of unusual cultural treasures / Bewahren besonderer Kulturgüter

The aim of the research performed in this project is to conserve hitherto little known or totally unknown works by past inmates of early psychiatric hospitals in Switzerland, to catalogue them, and to present them as unusual and remarkable cultural treasures for interdisciplinary discussion in cultural studies, and to present excerpts to the public in their own context.

The project is sponsored by the Schweizerischen Nationalfonds/DORE; leading house is Zurich's academy of arts - the ZHdK. It was awarded the sponsor's prize of the Schweizerische Gesellschaft für Kulturgüterschutz 2007 and enjoys the patronage of the Swiss UNESCO Commission.

In cooperation with Immobilienamt and Kantonale Denkmalpflege of the Canton of Zurich an exhibition has taken place at the Museum im Lagerhaus, St.Gallen (30.11.2010 – 13.3.2011). It will be shown at the University Museum of history of Medicine, Zurich (16.6.2011 – 12.1.2012) and at Rheinau in 2014.
A Publication accompanies the exhibition: Katrin Luchsinger, Iris Blum, Jacqueline Fahrni, Monika Jagfeld (Hg.), Rosenstrumpf und dornencknie. Werke aus der Psychiatrischen Pflegeanstalt Rheinau 1867 - 1930, Zürich, Chronos-Verlag.
In November 2011 the conference „art and psychiatrie“ will take place at the Kunstmuseum Berne.
